Recognizing the changing and dynamic landscape of communication, the important role played by various organizations, and the considerable influence exerted by new media technologies, there is a need to develop future leaders and managers specializing in communication that are largely considerate of the local and global conditions in which communication-based companies and institutions largely operate.
The Master of Arts in Communication major in Communication Management (MACM) of the PUP Open University System offers open and distance learning, equivalency, and accreditation schemes. This responds to the growing demand for a more innovative, creative, and skills-oriented curricular program steeped in research technology, culture, and management. It addresses the need for a more balanced Philippine communication ecosystem by preparing communication managers and decision-makers to be more attuned to the challenges of information society and global competition.
Program Description
The Master of Arts in Communication with a Major in Communication Management provides the tools and the skills required to plan, develop and implement communication strategies adapted to different cultural and socio-political environments.
The program’s learning competencies focus on the fundamental concepts, theories, and methods related to communication, while also helping students gain knowledge about new trends and forms of corporate and digital communication so as to be ready to work in a complex and ever-evolving environment.
Program Learning Outcomes
Identify, explain, and critique the major paradigms and theories that have shaped the field of communication, including their historical development and current trends;
Understand the ethical values that are central to the communication discipline and apply them in a variety of personal and professional contexts;
Communicate in a clear, persuasive, professional, and ethical manner that synthesizes ideas and information;
Critically assess information relevant to communication research and apply it across a variety of personal and professional contexts;
Formulate research questions about communication phenomena or topics, identify relevant methods or processes, and engage in research to answer those question(s);
Demonstrate advanced-level knowledge in communication, including one or more areas of specialization within the field;
Formulate a career plan to demonstrate skills for obtaining a position in the chosen profession or pursuing an advanced degree;
Use communications strategically to address specific organizational issues or challenges, as well as project management skills within a communications framework;
Recommend solutions to communications problems and develop effective working strategies with creative and technical experts; and
Design strategy and tactics for the implementation of communication plans and programs, and adapt and integrate new skills as technologies change.
